Sorte (pronounced "SOAR-chi") means "luck" in Portuguese and Sorte necklaces are a popular Brazilian tradition. Originally used as part of the scapular ("l'Escapulario") worn by monks over their habits, they have transformed over the centuries to become necklaces of protection and good luck.
Sorte necklaces are given as symbols of support and good wishes from one person to another. They are often presented to family members or friends at certain life milestones, such as when they get married, start a new job, go on a journey, undergo a medical procedure, get a driver's license... or at any other time when one wishes to show support and love.
What makes Sorte necklaces unique is that each necklace has two "protective" amulets and they are meant to be worn on both in the chest and the back by the wearer. It is believed that these amulets therefore surround the wearer with protection from any bad luck or ill will.
